In 1862, shorly after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed the people of the refugee of Mitchelville created a completely new culture that would become the first self-goverened Freedman's Village in America. Take a drive down Beach City road and explore the story and the history of the area and learn the role that Harriet Tubman played in its existence. 

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is 4053 acres of opportunities to explore and enjoy the outdoors from sunrise to sunset every day. Located between the mainland and Hilton Head Island, is the perfect opportunity to hike, observe and photograph wildlife, go fishing, or during the season, hunt white-tailed deer. The refuge contains over 250 species of birds, red fox, bobcat and a large gathering of alligators in and around the freshwater ponds.
